Lieutenant General (Retired) Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman was born in 1961. He retired as Principal Staff Officer on 29 November 2020. He was commissioned by the Bangladesh Military Academy in the year 1981 in the Corps of Infantry. He has served in various capacities in Bangladesh Army’s Command, Staff, and Instructional appointments. In his illustrious career, he commanded an Infantry Battalion, two Infantry Brigades and an Infantry Division. He served as the Director of Military Operations at Army Headquarters. He was also the Commandant of two prestigious institutions – Defence Services Command & Staff College and School of Infantry & Tactics. He is a graduate of Staff College and Armed Forces War Course. He has also graduated from National Defence College, New Delhi and Royal College of Defence Studies, London. He earned his master’s degree in Defence Studies, War Studies and Business Administration. He completed M. Phil from Madras University on Defence and Security Studies and received his PhD from Jahangir Nagar University on Non-Traditional Security Strategy.

As the head of the Armed Forces Division, he was directly involved with the UN Peacekeeping Affairs of Bangladesh Armed Forces. He was nominated as Gender Advocate of Bangladesh for UN Peacekeeping Affairs. He has also done two tours of duties as Staff in Region and Force Headquarters in Mozambique and Sierra Leone under the UN umbrella.

Besides, writing articles in magazines and dailies on contemporary security issues, he has edited a book on “Indo-Bangladesh Trade Relations” and his 2nd book on “A Study on Drug Proliferation in Bangladesh” was published in 2016. He frequents as a guest speaker/panelist and keynote speaker on Peace and Security in National, International Seminars and universities.

He is married to Begum Shahnaz Ahmed blessed with a son named Muhtasim Mahfuz. He enjoys reading and golfing.
